In folk medicine, Tagetes species are used to treat respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal complaints or dental problems [2]. The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin contained in the extract are part of the macula of the human eye. This is responsible for sharp vision. Lutein and zeaxanthin are only absorbed through food, the body cannot produce the carotenoids itself. In the macula they act as a filter of blue light and as an antioxidant.
