Flavex offers hop CO₂ extracts in two variants, specifically developed for cosmetic manufacturers who demand the highest standards of quality, functionality, and natural purity.
Overview of Flavex Hop CO₂ Extracts:
081.013
Hop CO₂-to extract, flavor reduced, standardized
- standardized to a content of 50 % humulones und lupulones
- flavor reduced, liquid at room temperature and easy to handle
- ideal for odor-sensitive formulations
- recommended dosage between 0.2 and 0.5 %
081.002
Hop CO₂-to extract, genuine quality
- contains 70 - 80 % humulones und lupulones, along with essential oil from hops
- For formulations with an authentic, slightly bitter fragrance
- Waxy at room temperature; becomes liquid at around 40 °C and is then relatively easy to process
- At concentrations of 0.1 - 0.3%, it has a slightly bitter hop note

Both hop CO₂ extracts can be easily incorporated into oil and fat phases or transferred into aqueous phases with the aid of emulsifiers. They offer a natural alternative to synthetic preservatives.
Use of Hop Extracts in Cosmetics
The lipophilic constituents of hops – particularly humulones and lupulones – exhibit proven strong antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria as well as against Trichophyton species [1, 2, 3]. In addition to these functional properties, hop extract imparts a characteristic hop aroma to cosmetic products, providing a pleasant, natural fragrance. Below is a selection of cosmetic application areas for our hop extracts:
Application Areas of Flavex Hop Extracts in Cosmetics
- Generally used in formulations for microbial stabilization; a combination with antioxidant extracts from rosemary or sage is recommended, as synergistic effects are often observed.
- The antibacterial effect can be utilized in deodorizing formulations; with emulsifiers, hop extracts can usually be easily incorporated into the aqueous phase [6].
- In foot care, hop extracts are of interest due to their effectiveness against Trichophytes; Trichophyton rubrum causes over 90% of all athlete’s foot infections [1].
- In formulations designed to support a disrupted skin microbiome, especially where efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus or Propionibacterium acnes is required, such as in atopic dermatitis or acne [2,7].
- Hops can impart a shine to dark hair and are therefore well suited for use in hair care products [2].
- Hops can help maintain healthy teeth [5]. We also recommend our Curcuma xanthorrhiza CO₂ extracts for this purpose.
