Application:
In traditional medicine Ajwain is used for gastrointestinal complaints [2]. Due to its main ingredient thymol, which has a strong germicidal effect on bacteria and fungi and has antispasmodic properties, Ajwain is also used for colds and respiratory diseases [2,3].*
Ajwain is used as a spice mainly in Indian and African cuisine and is contained in some well-known spice blends such as Berbere and Chaat Masala. Its aroma is similar to thyme and caraway and can therefore be used as a spice extract in various food preparations. Due to its antimicrobial properties, the extract also has a preservative effect in food as a positive side effect [3,4]. In addition, the Ajwain extract has an effect as natural antioxidant [5,6].*
Ajwain extracts are used in various cosmetic products. Due to the antimicrobial and fungicidal properties of the extract and its pleasant taste, it is used in mouthwash and toothpaste [3,4]. It can also be used as a fragrance in perfumes and deodorants.*
